October 2, 2007 Today we began
learning about place value. Students are learning to write a number in
four different ways: (1) standard notation, (2) expanded form
notation, (3) in hundreds, tens, and ones, and (4) in number word
form. Students are also learning the difference between place and
value in a number.
September 28, 2007 We have
been learning a lot about making connections to stories and how our
schema (what we already know) helps us to make connections to what we
read and helps us to understand text. We have learned that good
readers make self-to-text, text-to-text, and text-to-world
connections. Today we learned how to use a sticky note to help us keep
track of our connections.
September 27, 2007 Today was
our Oreo Cookie project. We began the day with a math problem to
determine the number of Oreo's in a pack of regular Oreo cookies.
Next, we estimated and then confirmed how many cookies we could stack
before our tower of cookies tumbled. Finally we took an Oreo to the
gym and we rolled it on the floor to see who's Oreo could roll the
furthest. It was an exciting day. Who knew Oreo cookies could taste so
yummy and yet involve so much math.

September 25, 2007 Students
have been participating in matter experiments and are learning a great
deal about solids, liquids, and gases. Students are also learning that
matter has properties and that matter can change from one state to
another. Did you know that gas takes up space?

September 17, 2007 The Book
Fair is visiting Dimon this week and we are very excited.
August 27, 2007 Students have
been participating in hands on math centers involving graphs. Students
are learning about picture graphs, pictographs, and bar graphs.
