Here are a few more ideas for developing a writing center:

  • Silly Pictures
Find silly pictures of snowmen from the Internet and print them out. Have them available to students in the writing center. They can select a picture and then write about it. You can even have pictures stored in a PowerPoint slideshow if you have a computer that is free. Students will visit the computer to select their picture.

  • Christmas Coloring Book Pages
Provide students with coloring books. These can be found at dollar stores. Students select a coloring page they like and carefully tear it out of the coloring book. If there are words at the bottom of the page they must be cut off.  Students select a piece of 11 x 17 construction paper and fold it in half (hamburger style). Students color their picture and then glue it onto the piece of construction paper. On a separate piece of lined writing paper, students write a story about their picture. When finished, students glue their writing on the opposite side of the coloring page. This makes a nice little mini-book for their stories. These can be laminated and then placed in the writing center or classroom library.

  • Christmas Writing Prompts & Story Starters
Provide students with writing calendar, writing prompt, or story starters.
